Our Vision
Our Vision is to improve the physical and mental health of people with physical disabilities through dancing.
Membership fees are paid per term and cover the cost of technical equipment, premises and professional instructors.
Why dance?
The Club was created by people with physical disabilities to promote fitness, physical activity, and body and mental well-being for the benefit of people with physical disability or with any mobility restrictions.
According to the Australian Network on Disability*, over 4 million people in Australia have some form of disability. In other words, 1 in 5 people. The disabled community is one of the most vulnerable groups in society. The last census shows more than 70% of people with disabilities are unemployed or have very low incomes. Moreover, almost 85% of people with disabilities suffer from depression, anxiety or eating disorders.
Dance & Roll provides an alternative to formal, organised sports for people with physical disabilities. They can engage in a Club that provides a friendly environment where people can socialise and improve their health. The health benefits of dancing include improving muscular strength and the condition of the heart and lungs, better balance, motor and aerobic fitness, better coordination, posture, flexibility and agility. Dancing also brings many social benefits, such as self-confidence, social interaction, and friendship building. Scientific research confirms that the body releases endorphins during physical activity, resulting in well-being and, sometimes, euphoria.
Structure
Dance&Roll has a governing board and is a community group registered with Consumer Affairs Victoria (A0105106F) under the Associations Incorporation Reform Act 2012. We provide reporting and minutes through CAV, and our ongoing aim through the governing committees is to advance and maintain Dance&Roll as a place of community, celebration and joy through dance.
We continue to be true to the vision of our founder and provide an inclusive dance space for all to enjoy for everyone for years to come.
In the beginning, a vision of inclusion and joy
Dance&Roll is a non-profit, community dance association founded in 2019 by Rocca Salcedo, a Colombian-born disability rights advocate and wheelchair user.
Rocca’s dream, founded at a kitchen table in Coburg, came when she saw a wheelchair dance exhibition. Having grown up around music and dance, she knew this was her calling – to start Australia’s first community para-dance (wheelchair dance) club.
Rocca passed away after a battle with breast cancer in November 2023, but her dream is still here in this incredible group – this was her gift to us, and it lives on for all to enjoy.
